Wikipedia - The Pros and Cons and Notes on Wikipedia:

In this age everyone, or almost everyone with access to a computer, has used Wikipedia, for general knowledge questions, essays, homeworks and general research. However over the past few years it has been stereotyped as a poor site with 'bad' quality material. People are obsessed by the plagiarism of Wikipedia text.

THE PROS:

In the eyes of the creator of Wikipedia, it is a site with varying quality. It has many well written articles with neutral opinions or no opinions, but does, he admits have many less well written articles that need to be revised and edited. However, with 400 million people using it monthly it is hard to keep track and check every article added by anyone of these people.

There are so many articles you can be almost certain to find a result.

There are 200+ languages available and it can be accessed all over the world.

Articles are written almost immediately after events occur.

It is ultimately free and very accessible and user friendly.

THE CONS:

The site can be edited by anyone and easily 'vandalised'.

There are sometimes inconclusive ends to articles and uncertain facts and can be incomplete, thin or misleading.

However, overall I think that Wikipedia is a good source of information and when used correctly can be reliable and very useful. It will also be useful in educating the developing world in the future.

Wikipedia's thoughts on researching with Wikipedia:

"Wikipedia can be a great tool for learning and researching information. However, as with all reference works, not everything in Wikipedia is accurate, comprehensive, or unbiased. Many of the general rules of thumb for conducting research apply to Wikipedia."

  • Wikipedia themselves say that you should be wary of the quality of the sources. They also say that Wikipedia has a 'unique nature' and therefore there are rules to how you use it to research and for the people who write the sources and articles as they can be accused of liable.
  • People who claim the articles are never finished are right as they are continuously edited and re-edited in order to improve them.
  • They also have links to all the external links and sources used which prove that they did not make it up. They also have all the notes and references to show what they used as facts and points.

Thank you for reading.

The Thingternet...

If you haven't noticed, we are living a very..fluid era. Things change and our lives change, but the biggest changes are yet to come.

Recently, Stuff  Magasine, an English gadget and tech magasine, has written an article about The Internet of Things, or the thingternet. It was telling about their ever-changing world and how things are becoming connected to the Internet and how its going to change our lives dramatically.

They introduces the online service known as IFTTT - If this then that. It connects things connected to the Internet or parts of the Internet to each other and runs simply on the rule: If this happens then that happens. For example if somebody sent you a Facebook message then it could send you a text message or automatically reply to that message - hence if this (the message) then that (the response). It can do endless things and aims to, in the future, connect thingternets to other thingternets...if that makes any sense :)

Other aspects of the thingternet...

Another article gave a synopsis of a-day-in-a-life in the thingternet. It showed how one day your calendar would talk to your alarm and on to your car and coffee machine, to warm up your car and make you a coffee. And that your alarm would talk to the weather and then tell your car to defrost the windows...and the day goes on, but it just showed how quickly things could and probably will change in our near future...

To keep up to date with the Internet of things have a look at this blog: The Thingternet

Welcome to my blog...
This post is about technology on the go...

...this is our life

but we came all the way
from this...

Technology is used in all kinds of industry including travel and in transport. For example if you just take a look into a pilots' cabin, you can see what it takes to keep a plane in the air. There are literally hundreds of computers inside that small cabin...

And take a look into our future...

It has taken us years to get anywhere near where we are and there is still far to go...

For example this BMW, with all the new technology, could be released within the next three years!

And this also is the future of trains and the technology behind them has already been developed - its one powerful computer behind this one...
