Wikipedia - The Pros and Cons and Notes on Wikipedia:
In this age everyone, or almost everyone with access to a computer, has used Wikipedia, for general knowledge questions, essays, homeworks and general research. However over the past few years it has been stereotyped as a poor site with 'bad' quality material. People are obsessed by the plagiarism of Wikipedia text.
THE PROS:
In the eyes of the creator of Wikipedia, it is a site with varying quality. It has many well written articles with neutral opinions or no opinions, but does, he admits have many less well written articles that need to be revised and edited. However, with 400 million people using it monthly it is hard to keep track and check every article added by anyone of these people.
There are so many articles you can be almost certain to find a result.
There are 200+ languages available and it can be accessed all over the world.
Articles are written almost immediately after events occur.
It is ultimately free and very accessible and user friendly.
THE CONS:
The site can be edited by anyone and easily 'vandalised'.
There are sometimes inconclusive ends to articles and uncertain facts and can be incomplete, thin or misleading.
However, overall I think that Wikipedia is a good source of information and when used correctly can be reliable and very useful. It will also be useful in educating the developing world in the future.
Wikipedia's thoughts on researching with Wikipedia:
"Wikipedia can be a great tool for learning and researching information. However, as with all reference works, not everything in Wikipedia is accurate, comprehensive, or unbiased. Many of the general rules of thumb for conducting research apply to Wikipedia."
- Wikipedia themselves say that you should be wary of the quality of the sources. They also say that Wikipedia has a 'unique nature' and therefore there are rules to how you use it to research and for the people who write the sources and articles as they can be accused of liable.
- People who claim the articles are never finished are right as they are continuously edited and re-edited in order to improve them.
- They also have links to all the external links and sources used which prove that they did not make it up. They also have all the notes and references to show what they used as facts and points.
